Our Erosion Defense System is a trademarked system that is the result of seven years of R&D. After analyzing the effects of wave action on larger lakes and sheet flow erosion behind homes we identified faults in other rip rap systems installed by other contractors. We then addressed those weaknesses and developed a system that defends better and lasts longer in order to maximize our clients’ investment in their lakes.
WHY IT WORKS
Because this system does not allow for native littoral growth or animal nesting, state and local agencies only allow it for up to 40% of any lake’s shoreline. So, it is best used only in heavily-eroded areas of the shoreline of a freshwater lake. In Lee County, FL it is generally not used behind homes without an extensive permitting process, but we have other options for those areas. Contact us for details.
Rip rap along canals is generally allowed with a simple permit. We can either stabilize the shoreline itself or “shore-up” an existing seawall to help make it sturdier.
Rip rap is used extensively along marine (salt-water) shorelines due to its ability to withstand a lot of wave action. The proper sized rip rap must be used as well as a heavy-duty commercial underlayment. Our experts will make recommendations on the proper specs for both.
COST ANALYSIS
Cost Per Linear Foot | Expected Lifespan | Future Repair Costs | |
---|---|---|---|
Seabreeze Erosion | $90-$150 | Decades | $0* |
Grading, fill, sod | $68 | 2-24 mos | $68.00 every 2-24 mos** |
Geotube / Polyethylene containment systems / 3D open-cell systems | $62-$99 | 2-8 yrs | $75-$125 every 2-8 yrs*** |
Littorals Only (other lake maintenance companies) | $7.50-$11 | 6 mos-2 yrs | $7.50-$11 every 6 mos-2 yrs |
*Under normal environmental conditions
**A customer in Naples reported that this repair lasted only 2 months on a single "test home" that was done during summer months. The entire shoreline had to be done again.
***Based on feedback from our customers. The cost to tear out the old tube or poly-woven containment system, re-grade, and install a more permanent system.
NOTE: All expected lifespans are estimations only and are subject to change due to anomalous weather, environmental forces, and acts of God.
EROSION DEFENSE
Our Erosion Defense SystemsTM have been through at least two major hurricanes and multiple tropical storms. In each case there was no damage done to the structural stability, or function, of our systems. Out of the miles of shoreline we have stabilized with this system, we have had only two warranty repairs in nearly 11 years. One was a 10-foot section at a community in Naples, FL that required additional underlayment and the other one was a residential lot in Punta Gorda in which simply placed a new layer of dirt underneath sod. Both were done within a week and at no expense to the customer.
This is a “before picture” of a canal in Fort Myers that was causing erosion and land-loss. The homeowner on the left asked us to secure the shoreline with the most permanent system that we had. We proposed our Erosion Defense SystemTM and were hired to install the project.
This is a picture of the shoreline upon completion in 2013. We make sure the rip rap (native rock broken down to 6-12” pieces) is installed in a clean, straight line for aesthetics. But it’s the poly-woven geotextile that is installed underneath the rip rap that is the real hero! It is what actually secures the bank. Most other contractors install rip rap directly onto the shoreline or they simply pin some mat down and stack rocks on top of it. This leads to erosion and failure within a few years to several years! We have developed a proprietary installation method that secures the poly mat to the top of the shoreline for optimal hydrogeological (hydrodynamic) function. This means that there are no weak spots and water simply cannot undermine the system due to concentrated flow or sheet flow erosion. Our process does not involve trenching as we have found trenches typically just create a channel with a propensity to fill up and wash out.
This is a picture of the same shoreline in 2023. After 10 years our Erosion Defense SystemTM remains extremely effective at erosion control and shoreline stabilization with less than one inch of measured land loss! The lawn care company had been spraying the top of the sod a bit more than we would have liked to see, but overall the system is holding up extremely well. Based on this, we expect our system to last decades under normal conditions saving hundreds of square feet of private property from falling into the water and keeping the property in compliance with South Florida Water Management District.
