Concentrated water flow causes erosion. In addition to addressing the erosion on your lake’s shoreline, it is important to consider the source of the water. The larger the roofs or buildings, the more water that is collected from rain and the higher volume of water you have running down into your lake. When this water collects between homes or from congregating rain gutter downspouts, you get cavities and washouts on your shoreline. You need a marine contractor with proven, effective solutions to fix this. Contact us today to speak with one of our specialists about a quote (commercial projects only; we do not offer services to residential clients).
Below are some of the services we offer in conjunction with our lake, pond, river, and canal erosion repairs.
Underground pipes absolutely must be installed by a professional landscaping company certified in GI-BMP or by a General Contractor or Marine Contractor. Don’t trust your “lawn care guys” to do these! It could lead to massive washouts and further repairs! First, we do an analysis of the washouts and cavities present on your shoreline. Then we identify the cause of the concentrated water. Lastly, we must calculate the volume of water collected by the adjacent structures to determine the size of pipe and collection boxes to use (if needed).
By tying into your rain gutters, our pipes carry the water downhill, underneath your shoreline, and into your lake. Only a certain type of ADS pipe should be used for this and it must be buried at the proper depth and slope.
Also, the trench must be back-filled with a mixed aggregate and hydro packed in lifts, otherwise it can fail.
A French Drain is a polypropylene box that is buried underground at a certain depth. It has an open grate at the top that collects water in a low area or bottom of a trough. It has one or more outlets that allow the water to exit into an underground pipe and into a lower body of water. We find that a properly-installed French Drain is as effective as an underground pipe connected to a downspout. Many factors go into a French Drain installation including size of box, number of boxes, depth, and positioning.
Sometimes, several boxes need to be used if an area collects a lot of water.
Channel drains are designed to withstand a certain amount of weight from lawn care equipment and foot traffic. They can be used in landscaping applications such as in grass, but must be installed with a concrete footing to work properly. The depth of the box and angle at which the water approaches is very important so it must be installed by a certified contractor or concrete mason. These have proven to be effective on high volumes of water, if there is wide sheet flow causing the erosion instead of concentrated flow in one narrow channel.
Often, the back or side of a property needs a swale or culvert to direct water out to the road. It is important to get the downward pitch just right so that the water flows at the intended velocity. Also, you must prepare the area with a special woven underlayment and top it with a good aggregate such as shell or stone. This should create a permanent solution that carries water and lasts a long time.
The ultimate goal is to carry as must water as possible from the roofs and properties into the lake or stormwater management system before it enters the local canals and eventually the Gulf of America. This helps prevent costly erosion, land loss, potential fines, and property damange.
Some factors that must be considered for a proper installation:
how much water must be handled and what size piping is needed?
how much of the soil is comprised of silica sand vs. clay, shell, or organic matter?
is there an erosion control system that can be installed that can handle the water run-off WITHOUT the need for rain gutter extensions or French Drains?
how are you going to achieve the compaction needed to mimic the native, virgin soil?
is the system being installed easy to maintain and who will maintain it?
At Seabreeze Erosion Solutions we are experts at drainage systems. Contact us to get a quote on your lakes today!
